Wordplay aside, it can actually be difficult to snag a reservation at No Vacancy, an eclectic boutique hotel occupying a prime second-floor space in Kansas City’s lively Crossroads neighborhood. There are just eight rooms, plus a charming interior courtyard and a stylish lounge, and the place is sometimes entirely booked out for weddings or events.

No Vacancy is not a conventional hotel. There’s no front desk, and rooms are more like studio apartments. No two are alike, but they’re all infused with ample natural light and a cozy, bohemian-chic sensibility: exposed brick walls, wood-beamed ceilings, large windows framed by breezy white drapery, and potted plants. They feature a mix of mid-century modern pieces and quirkier furnishings, like bamboo barstools, a metallic gold disco ball over the bed, or a woven wicker chair suspended from the ceiling. Three have kitchenettes; one a freestanding clawfoot tub, and another a romantic four-poster bed and a vintage wet bar.

At the end of the main hallway, the colorful communal lounge, with its plush banquette seating, opens onto the inviting courtyard patio. Both offer plenty of space to work, socialize, or relax over coffee or drinks.
