Diseño moderno y Animado
Downtown Auckland evolved dramatically in the first decades after the Second World War, and has continued to do so: its central business district is now as modern as any world capital. With one exception. High Street, running in parallel right alongside Queen Street, the city’s main thoroughfare, fell into neglect and disrepute — and, along with it, so did the landmark Hotel DeBrett. But as so often happens in down-at-heel city-center districts, High Street is now prized for its historical character, and has become one of the city’s hippest neighborhoods — as, along with it, the renovated and reimagined Hotel DeBrett has become one of the city’s hippest hotels.
In its new incarnation it reflects High Street’s creative, eclectic character right back at it, thanks to its new owners, John Courtney and Michelle Deery, the latter of whom actually served as the hotel’s interior designer. Her signature is most visible in the wildly patterned, brightly colored carpets, but extends throughout, down to the inspiring contrast of mid-century modern furniture and Art Deco architecture.
And though it may have been named after DeBrett’s Guide to Etiquette, there’s nothing at all stuffy about the hotel’s crowd. Surrounded as it is by galleries, theaters, cafés, and unique shops, from secondhand boutiques to bespoke tailors, it’s naturally a magnet for all kinds of creative types. You’ll find travelers and locals alike in DeBretts Kitchen, which sits in the hotel’s central glass-roofed atrium, as well as in the twin bars: Housebar, the Twenties-inspired cocktail bar, and Cornerbar, something more like an upscale local pub.
