Hotel Sureño
The hotel sees a steady stream of people, thanks to a great restaurant and a stylish rooftop bar and pool deck that regularly hosts happy hours, DJ sets, and live jazz. But it’s particularly pleasurable to check into one of Hotel Sureño’s 17 rooms. They’re like staying in the stylish guest room of a well-traveled friend, outfitted in a mix of contemporary décor and eclectic details like antique writing desks, wicker headboards, abstract artwork, vintage radios and globes, and ceramics by local artisans.
A notable benefit of an overnight stay is that the rooftop is exclusively open to guests during the day. The rule ensures that the breezy terrace, its aquamarine pool draped with fluttering white fabric and surrounded by hammocks, lounge space, and potted plants, remains as laid-back as possible. It opens to the public just before sunset, and plenty of restaurant diners come up for tropical drinks before or after their meal, creating an ambience that’s just buzzy enough — ideal for a refreshing dip or a poolside cocktail after a day out exploring Mayan ruins or swimming in cenotes.

Sureño in Mérida, Yucatán, is anything but ordinary. Its music-themed vibe, complete with books about iconic musicians and vinyl record covers in the room, made the stay feel thoughtfully curated. It’s a hotel with personality and charm, and I loved the creative touches. Breakfast each morning was delightful, and the Manager’s dedication was impressive—they seemed to be working from morning through late night to ensure everything went smoothly. That said, I did find the room a bit small, with a tiny sink and vanity. Some of the furniture felt a little cluttered—there were moments I wished for one bigger, practical table instead of multiple smaller ones. There was also a hiccup with my reservation made through Tablet Hotels. Sureño was overbooked for my final night, which made me uneasy as a solo traveler. However, the team addressed it proactively, arranging a seamless transfer to a nearby property. The suite I stayed in at nearby Diez Diez Hotel was incredible—spacious, beautifully designed, and stocked with champagne. Despite the small room size and reservation mix-up, Sureño’s originality, excellent service, and proactive communication made for a memorable stay. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and creative hotel experience in Mérida.
