Pressed for a theory as to why the Philippines don’t quite get their due as a holiday destination for Westerners, the only explanation we can offer is that it’s a really long flight from both North America and Europe. More and more long-haul travelers are making the pilgrimage, however, and the local hotel scene is undergoing something of a quiet renaissance — and the Crimson Resort & Spa, on the island of Mactan, right next to Cebu, is a prime example.
Quiet because it would be impossible to argue that Crimson’s design, however handsome, is one for the history books. It’s a conservative look, one that’s clearly meant to appeal to the broadest possible audience, and to place the visual focus squarely on the extraordinary environment that is Mactan Island itself. But it’s clear that they’ve learned the lessons of the last few decades of high-end boutique-influenced Pacific Rim villa resorts.
Here 40 villas offer that exceedingly private brand of luxury — think plunge pools, four-poster beds, jaw-dropping ocean views — while another 250 guest rooms offer a more accessible version of the experience, sacrificing a bit of space and privacy but not skimping at all on comforts or conveniences.
A three-tiered infinity pool cascades across the central courtyard, and the private beach is only a few steps away. The promised spa is an expansive one, with no fewer than 14 therapy rooms, and the charmingly named Crimzone is where you park the kids for the duration of your massage. Add two restaurants, a beach club bar and grill, and even a sports bar (!), and your entertainment is sorted. All this just twenty minutes from Mactan airport.
