Modern Design & Lively
Just off Las Ramblas, the pedestrian thoroughfare that runs from Barcelona’s old quarter to the sea, and walking distance from the picturesque Gothic Quarter, Hotel España is well placed as a home base from which to explore this famously vibrant city. But it’s more than a pied-à-terre; with its multiple layers of architectural history, Hotel España is a part of Barcelona’s richly detailed design personality.
The hotel was founded in 1859, and saw a thorough modernist revamp in the early 20th century, at the hands of architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Following a restoration effort in 2010, the hotel’s unique blend of historical styles is showcased once again — with the welcome addition of some modern details, like king beds, free wi-fi, and an open-air swimming pool.
The España’s vintage style is one that feels particularly modern, especially in the rooms — expect a palette of neutral tones, offset by pops of sharp black and bright white. The critically acclaimed Restaurante Fonda España showcases this parallel, too — Chef Martin Berasategui has created a menu of traditional Catalonian cuisine, executed using cutting-edge modern techniques. Even if you’re tempted, don’t stay in: Hotel España is an introduction to Barcelona city living, but only an introduction. (And if you need an extra push, some tapas and a cocktail or three at Bar Arnau should get you going.)
