Cutting-Edge & Quiet
We’ve remarked before on the effortlessness with which Italian hoteliers and designers combine the old and the new; even in medieval Florence it’s possible for a hotel to pay homage to the city’s history through the medium of contemporary architecture and design. Fornace Suite, set on a cobbled street on the south side of the Arno River, is just such a place, its six suites designed by the celebrated local studio Archea Associati in tribute to six Florentine artists, from Donatello and Bernini to Michelangelo himself.

There’s nothing at all antique or retro about these spaces, handsome in muted grays and unpainted wood; concrete floors provide a neutral backdrop for eye-catching contemporary furnishings, while gauzy curtains further soften that legendary Tuscan sunlight. The style is somehow at once austere and warm, and the physical comforts are first-rate.

With just six suites, of course, this isn’t exactly a full-scale grand hotel. For services like restaurants and bars you’ll have to look elsewhere. Fortunately, the immediate surroundings in Oltrarno are amply supplied with options, as well as picturesque churches, markets, and artisans’ workshops — and, just across the river, the practically endless attractions of central Florence await.
