The southernmost island in Greece’s Sporades archipelago is also its least-visited. A world apart from cruise ship crowds and tourists in pursuit of the perfect photo op, bohemian Skyros is comparatively rugged and remote — and ALERÓ Seaside Skyros Resort, elegantly secluded and low-key, is very much of its place. This seaside boutique hotel takes its name from the Greek words for salt (álas) and water (neró). Separated from the water only by picturesque sand dunes, it’s just a short stroll down to a sandy beach where guests recline beneath picturesque white umbrellas and waitstaff take orders for iced coffees and spritzes. Forget about claiming a chaise with a strategically placed towel: there are just twelve suites at this intimately sized resort, so there’s always more than enough room for everyone.

Back on the other side of the dunes, the hotel’s suites offer a similar level of space and privacy. Simply furnished in earth tones, all feature wood paneling and speckled tile flooring, linen sofas and hanging plants. Filled with natural light, they’re quietly luxurious, and each has a private outdoor space with a plunge pool. A number of suites are duplex-style, comfortably accommodating families or small groups, and all come with desirable extras like modern kitchenettes, outdoor dining spaces, or sea views.
