There’s an old-world elegance to the Hotel Milano Scala, a luxury hotel located a short stroll from the Duomo: polished marble and gleaming parquet floors, deep red velvet drapery, a harpist performing over breakfast. Such sophisticated details very nearly distract you from the property’s more futuristic attributes; it’s the first zero emissions hotel in Milan, featuring a small organic garden that produces herbs, vegetables and edible flowers for the Sky Terrace Restaurant & Bar. You’ll look down over the greenery, sipping a cocktail made with herbs grown there, from the stylish rooftop bar, which also offers panoramic views over the city’s spire-spiked skyline. Afterward, retreat to one of the hotel’s guest rooms. Some face an internal courtyard fragrant with jasmine, others have Jacuzzis and large murals inspired by archival photographs from inside the Teatro alla Scala. Suites have two levels, mimicking the layout of a grand opera theater, as well as furnishings by Italian designers, and Carrara marble tubs.
