They’ve welcomed guests here for more than 100 years, and the hotel received a full renovation in recent years. The historic architectural bones, like wooden rafters, remain in place, but the 48 renovated rooms incorporate clean, modern touches. The truth is that you won’t want to spend your time indoors during the day — so you’ll be pleased to know that each room comes with a large private patio for maximum fresh air intake, and many rooms feature an ocean view. The nights can be chilly in this neck of the woods, though, so there’s a gas or wood-buring fireplace in your room for a cozy evening.
The charming Victorian village of Mendocino is nearby, as is Redwood State Park. But you don’t even have to leave the resort to get the most of the great California outdoors. There are acres of oceanfront trails, gardens, and forest paths open to the guests. Back at the hotel, there’s a stellar farm-to-fork restaurant that also features local wines.
