Barcelona was quick to adapt to the boutique-hotel trend — for a time, it seemed as though every second or third new opening was located in the Catalonian capital, many of them flamboyantly aggressive design hotels. But now it’s the turn of a new generation, as hoteliers everywhere temper their minimalist instincts with a generous helping of coziness. Villa Emilia provides a case in point.

They’re (justifiably) proud of the impeccably curated design pieces that furnish their guest rooms, but they’re equally proud of the fact that they’re spectacularly habitable as well, in a number of configurations — doubles, twins, even triples and connecting rooms, something of a rarity in a boutique hotel.

Smart, stylish rooms go a long way. But to stand out in this town, a hotel needs more. Villa Emilia Bistrot, the restaurant, serves cocktails, wine, lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch, all in an attractive, intimate space with occasional live music. And Villa Emilia la Terrassa is the ace in the hole, or, more precisely, on the roof — two hundred square meters of rooftop space, with a panoramic view, a bar of its own, and a barbecue menu to boot.
