Jeju’s gorgeous coastline has long been dotted with hotels, but the JW Marriott Jeju Resort & Spa, the brand’s first in South Korea, quickly earned the distinction of the island’s most luxurious getaway when it opened in 2023. Perched on a clifftop overlooking the sea, its design takes inspiration from Korean heritage and the volcanic landscape: it’s built of basalt rock and timber, and the light-filled lobby, with its decorative woodwork and floor-to-ceiling windows facing the ocean, is modeled on a hanok, or traditional house. The striking omakase-style Yeoumul restaurant specializes in seafood caught by the island’s storied female divers, and rooms, designed by the American architect Bill Bensley, feature warm yellow tones mirroring the natural beauty of the nearby canola fields.
