A ninety-minute drive southeast of Porto, deep in a pocket of the countryside little visited by tourists, the village of Santar is home to about a thousand residents — and a gorgeous Relais & Châteaux hotel that’s very much worth the detour. Formerly a royal residence, Valverde Santar Hotel & Spa is grand and historic, surrounded by picturesque gardens and centuries-old vineyards. A regal air remains in the hotel’s formal sitting rooms with their gilded chandeliers, original oil paintings, antique loveseats, and original hand-carved woodwork. But rooms and suites are smartly updated, both modern and quaint. The old winery was transformed into a state-of-the-art spa with a spacious indoor pool and a Turkish bath, and the mansion’s original library now serves as an atmospheric breakfast room.
