Traditional Elegance & Quiet
When it comes to overnight lodgings, you can’t get any closer to the palace at Versailles than Les Lumières: the luxury hotel is literally its neighbor, located just steps from its front gate. Housed in a pair of historic pavilions that were stitched together and thoroughly updated ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics, Les Lumières is not just a wildly convenient place to stay while enjoying a leisurely visit to King Louis XIV’s royal residence — it’s practically a museum unto itself. The theme is the Age of Enlightenment, and at check-in, guests receive a key inside a small book that tells a story of the famous philosopher, explorer, writer, or scientist their room is named after, from Voltaire to Descartes.
The look downstairs channels the classic elegance of the Grand Siècle with heavy crystal chandeliers, oversized mirrors, and an opulent turn-of-the-century staircase. But rooms and suites, high-ceilinged and spacious, have more of a modern edge: some feature bold patterned wallpaper and others have coffered walls painted a crisp sage green, but all have colorful details from mustard-yellow or cherry-red duvets to velvet ottomans in turquoise or navy blue. Some face views of the famous château across the street, as does one of the hotel’s chief highlights, the gorgeous Café Pierre Hermé with its rose-pink banquettes and high arched windows. Sparkling wines are the drink of choice in the gilded Bar des Philosophes, and a charming boutique specializes in takeaway patisserie by the in-house pastry chef.
