Myconian Avaton

The Myconian Collection is a smallish, homegrown, locally owned hotel chain, and fully a third of its hotels happen to be located in the hills above Elia Beach, which ought to tell you something about how spectacular this place is. The Myconian Avaton Resort is the highest of the three, with the panoramic views and the relative seclusion that that implies. And its rooms, suites and villas are among the group’s most luxurious — though, to be fair, that’s drawing the distinctions pretty finely, as the others are not exactly rough.

The look is contemporary, full of contrasting black and white and vivid pops of color, a welcome departure from the white-and-Aegean-blue standard. Many of the villas and suites have direct sea views, plunge pools, outdoor jacuzzis, or some combination of the three. And even the standard rooms spread out over 27 square meters, with the full complement of up-to-date modern comforts. Meanwhile, you’ll dine on the terrace with that grand view unfurled in front of you, and you’ll pass many a daytime hour on the pool deck or in the capacious Sanctuary Spa. Mykonos is perhaps the most familiar of Greek island destinations, but that shouldn’t count against it: its pleasures, after all, are timeless.
