Though its architecture, design, and craftsmanship may put you in mind of a historical palace experience, Malabar Hill is, at its heart, an entirely modern luxury boutique hotel. Its hilltop location lends its 14 villas far-ranging views, some over the forested hillsides and others over Weligama Bay and the distant sea. The furnishings may be antique, but the comforts are contemporary, and more than a little bit high-end; there’s a spa, a salt-water infinity pool, and, in the central Hill House, a panoramic open-air restaurant and bar serving artfully composed interpretations of traditional Sri Lankan flavors.
