Het advies van de MICHELIN Gids

Call it tunnel vision, or the herd mentality of the travel industry; for all the vastness that is Indonesia, most holiday visitors are drawn to Bali like moths to a light. Certainly there’s no place like it — but conversely, there’s no place on Bali like Amanwana.

Take one last look at the crowds and development in Bali as you pass through, boarding a Cessna Caravan seaplane at Denpasar airport for the hour-long flight to the nature reserve of Moyo Island — once you’re out here, there’s no sign of human habitation, apart from the 17 luxury tents that make up the resort, and the open-air pavilions that house the hotel’s facilities.

As you may have guessed, this is a more nature-intensive experience than many of the other Aman resorts. The tents are all identical but for their location, closer to the beach or to the jungle — neither situation is objectively superior. Each is partially walled in, surrounded by a stone deck, and lavishly furnished with king beds, writing desks, sitting rooms and sprawling, decadent bathrooms.

The dive center proves popular, complete with certification program, and the hotel owns an assortment of boats to be used for diving, fishing and cruising the neighboring islands. A variety of guided treks and nature walks are available, for guests who prefer the comfort of dry land, and those seeking less active pursuits can choose from a variety of massages and body treatments. Whatever your speed, prepare to disconnect from the outside world, and get back to nature.

How to get there: Amanwana is accessible from Denpasar-Ngurah Rai International Airport. Trans Nusa operates a 52-seat plane from Bali to Sumbawa airport at $295 USD per person each way, inclusive of a boat transfer upon arrival. Guests may also choose to fly by helicopter. A helicopter landing area near the camp allows for direct access to Amanwana from Bali. The cost of a one-way transfer is $5,350 USD.
