The Georgian

A rare piece of Old Hollywood glamour in modern Santa Monica, the Georgian is nothing if not distinctive — this turquoise-and-gold Art Deco mini-skyscraper stands prominently on Ocean Avenue. Its history since its Thirties opening is not unbroken, but under new owners — and with the help of some skilled local designers — it’s been restored to an approximation of its former glory, and it immediately established itself as one of Santa Monica’s hippest hotels.

We say “an approximation” because it’s less a faithful restoration and more a lovingly conceived tribute, a fantasy version of Golden Age opulence that’s more inspiring than the real thing. The colors, for instance, recall the heyday of Art Deco, but they’re more vivid, more saturated. And there’s a certain postmodern self-awareness to the style and the atmosphere, a sense of playfulness that’s missing from some more historically minded hotels.

The best rooms look out across Ocean Avenue at the Pacific, but the city views are pleasant as well. The restaurant’s Dining Room, Sunset Bar, and Sunset Terrace combine Thirties elegance with a contemporary Californian sensibility, while the Georgian Room delves a little deeper into throwback style — and doubles as an intimate music venue, something this corner of greater Los Angeles sorely needs.
