With its picturesque canals and elegant waterfront palaces, Aveiro is sometimes called the Venice of Portugal. This seaside town got its first five-star hotel when one of those palaces was reborn as the MS Collection Aveiro - Palacete Valdemouro. The 18th-century landmark still has its original Moorish details, coffered ceilings, glittering chandeliers, and neoclassical facade, but the interiors have been smartly updated with polished parquet floors, luxe floor-to-ceiling drapery, and a mix of modern and Art Deco elements. Each room is named after a character from the works of Eça de Queiroz, the Portuguese novelist and diplomat who once lived here, and a literary theme prevails: there’s a cozy reading room, writing quills fashioned into art, and a large mural of the author by the courtyard swimming pool and café.
