Modern Design & Lively
The Kimpton Banneker Hotel is blessed with a memorable location; from 16th St. NW there’s a direct view of the White House. But the Banneker isn’t one for neoclassical kitsch, nor for Parisian pomp. The prevailing mood is a modernist-inspired minimalism, and the artworks avoid historical subjects; the real culture of D.C. is African-American, and not only is the Banneker named after a Black astronomer and mathematician, but its art collection heavily features Black artists as well.

In the rooms you’ll find a style that belies the capital’s reputation for aesthetic conservatism; the white walls and blond wood lend a gallery-like atmosphere, which focuses the eye on the artworks, and on decorative elements in emerald green and midnight blue. And while it’s not meant to compete with the city’s most extravagant luxury hotels, it’s more than comfortable enough, with details like Frette linens and Atelier Bloem bath products.

Finally, in Le Sel, the hotel’s French restaurant, tribute is paid to D.C.’s most beloved European influence; it’s inspired by a Parisian bistro, and during the warmer months it’s open to the sidewalk outside. Meanwhile Lady Bird, named for Mrs. Johnson, is the indoor-outdoor rooftop bar, with a view over the street life of Dupont Circle.
