MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

A brand-new hotel in Beacon Hill sounds almost like a contradiction in terms — this is the old side of Boston, where buildings’ ages are measured out in centuries. But at the foot of the Longfellow Bridge, a brand-new luxury boutique hotel is exactly what you’ll find. The Whitney Hotel fits perfectly into its red-brick surroundings, and inside you’ll find interiors that perfectly thread a stylistic needle — classic enough for the bluest blueblood, and contemporary enough to clearly declare its modern boutique bona fides.

Space is plentiful — the humblest room fits a king bed with room to spare — and the comforts are high-end, including 55-inch televisions and Nespresso machines. The best views face the Charles River, though the Beacon Hill views aren’t exactly hard on the eye, either. And once you’re in one of the suites, you’re looking at the sort of luxury that’s easily the rival of any of Boston’s big-name five-star hotels.

Meanwhile Peregrine, the restaurant, is a significant addition to Boston’s culinary scene. It’s the work of a couple of award-winning local restaurateurs, whose other restaurant, Juliet, is an Allston favorite. Here they serve an idiosyncratic Mediterranean fare, focused on Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica and Catalonia — and give Beacon Hill one more reason to welcome the Whitney with open arms.
