Modern Design & Happening
It’s hard to believe that bears, tigers, and monkeys once lived in the Granger Building, an elegant Romanesque-style landmark in the Gaslamp Quarter. This five-story building was originally a bank, and its basement served as a temporary residence for animals before the 1916 opening of the San Diego Zoo; more than a century later, the building was reborn as the design-forward Granger Hotel.

Many of its charming original features remain, like the tin ceilings, high arching windows, and grand hallways, and whimsical references to the building’s past, including a custom mural with wildlife motifs, were integrated into its sophisticated updates. Rooms are outfitted in shades of navy blue and espresso with a mix of modern and vintage-inspired pieces, including Art Deco-style armoires, quirky antiques, plush flower-shaped headboards, and custom leather sofas. There’s no restaurant, but breakfast is served in the greenery-framed lobby lounge, and the low-lit Parlor Room is an irresistible spot for a nightcap.
