Facing the Piazza di Santa Maria Novella, a 16th-century building has been transformed into a contemporary boutique hotel. Hotel L’Orologio — Italian for “clock” — is, rather uniquely, devoted as much to Swiss watchmaking as to Florentine architecture, with floors named for the likes of Patek Philippe and Rolex. The lounge bar serves light fare all day, but beyond that you’re at the mercy of the local restaurants — no great privation, given the wealth of options beginning immediately outside.
