The Polish mountain resort of Zakopane is full of alpine-style wooden chalets, one of which has been smartly transformed into a stylish adults-only boutique hotel. Slightly removed from the busy center of town, it’s ideal for a romantic getaway. Villa Milimani’s delightful gingerbread-house façade, with its steep gables and decorative woodwork, hasn’t changed much since its original construction. But inside, the hotel is a dazzling showcase of modern Scandinavian design and local craft tradition. Rooms are luminous and almost entirely outfitted in glass and pale wood: exposed beams, herringbone paneled walls, parquet floors, hand-carved wooden archways. The beds and desks are made of wood, unsurprisingly, but so are bathroom sinks and mirrors. Velvet sofas, botanical patterned rugs, and nature-inspired artwork warm things up, and many rooms have views of the Tatra Mountains or the village’s rooftops.
