La Perla Villas & Suites
At this late date no one is going to be taken by surprise upon arrival at Oia, in Santorini. The spectacular caldera is a true natural wonder, and it’s been photographed from every conceivable angle — and the view from this village on the crescent’s northern arm is quite possibly the most desirable. Any hotel that’s going to stand out here is going to do it by virtue of the fine details — and there will be guests for whom only La Perla Villas & Suites, with its particular vision of modern-classic Cycladic hospitality, will do.
The genre, you might say, is subtle, modernist-inflected luxury, with boutique-hotel characteristics. The classic color scheme of aquamarine and white is honored in the breach — here it’s a more diverse array of greens, blues, and violet, against a backdrop of white and gray. The most modest of the rooms comes with a veranda and a direct view of the caldera; as you ascend the range, they add outdoor hot tubs, plunge pools, and, in one case, a private infinity pool. Add a restaurant that serves everything from a perfect Greek breakfast to immaculately composed, seafood-forward modern Mediterranean fare and you’re looking at a thoroughly well-executed Santorini escape.
