Hacienda El Santuario San Miguel de Allende
The hotel’s aesthetic charms are divided judiciously among eleven guest rooms. In the smaller rooms, décor is tasteful and spare, with elegant wrought-iron bed frames that offset the pure white walls and cream-colored sofas. Regional artwork, from ornate vases to vibrant paintings, adds splashes of local color, while dark wooden armoires and tables lend some luxury weight to the comfortable atmosphere. Bathrooms are spacious, with cheery patterned tile and a bit of stone here and there.
Except for a few visible hints at modernization — miniature fountains, patio umbrellas, the odd electric lamp — the lush courtyard could be a portal to the original 16th-century space. While you’re probably not staying here for resort-hotel amenities, a fairly extensive menu of massages and spa treatments is available, and an art gallery showcasing local work with an emphasis on young and underprivileged artists is a unique addition. Outside the front door, you’re immediately deposited into downtown San Miguel de Allende, two blocks from the legendary pink granite parish church and a wealth of historical sights.
How to get there: Hacienda El Santuario Centro is about 1h40min drive from Bajio Airport in San Miguel de Allende. Airport transfers can be arranged for USD85 in a private car for up to 4 guests, each way.
