Tommie, as you may have guessed from the name, can be seen as the more youthful and more casual version of the Thompson Hollywood — and they’re easy to compare, as they’re right around the corner from one another, between Sunset and Hollywood Boulevard in a vibrant and rapidly changing corner of the city. In fact it’s a member of Hyatt’s JdV brand rather than Thompson — long story — but the comparison still stands: where the other is unmistakably a luxury boutique hotel, this one is a bit more attainable, occupying, in its own words, a space “between luxury and minimalism.”

The most practical consequence is that the rooms are economical with their square footage; with simple, uncluttered layouts they never feel cramped, and once you’re in a suite you’ve got nearly 400 square feet to spread out in, under a 12-foot ceiling. The comforts, however, are still substantial — this simply isn’t a hole-up-in-your-room sort of place. Tommie’s restaurant imports the flavors of Tulum and the Yucatán Peninsula, while its rooftop lounge is inspired by Palm Springs — both lend this decidedly urban corner of Hollywood a certain far-flung escapist vibe.
