Shelborne South Beach

South Beach
200 Rooms
Modern Design & Lively
You’d think the last mid-century Art Deco hotel on Miami Beach’s Collins Avenue would have been discovered decades ago, but apparently they’re a renewable resource. The Shelborne South Beach dates back to 1940, and had a good run in the postwar years, but it’s only recently — after a lengthy period of renovation — that it’s joined the ranks of the city’s contemporary-style boutique hotels.

The rooms are quietly stylish, in a restrained palette of white, blue, and earth tones, and while they start out fairly cozy, the junior suites verge on the extravagant, and the townhouse and penthouse suites are luxurious indeed. Among the hotels in this part of Miami Beach, this is one of the more down-to-earth, and that’s entirely to its credit — some of its near neighbors reach truly astounding heights of opulence, but here a balance is struck that keeps the Shelborne desirable but still attainable.

To that end, the restaurants, run by a pair of Top Chef alums, keep things accessible. Root & Bone serves upscale, inventive Southern fare, while the Oasis Beer Garden, down by the pool, serves barbecue and fresh seafood. Shelborne Cafe is there for breakfast straight through to happy-hour cocktails, the Oasis Garden & Grill delivers food and cocktails straight to your cabana, and the Drawing Room is the craft-cocktail nightspot.

The gentleman who handled the whole check-in and checkout process was incredible. Very helpful, very friendly, very polite.

This hotel was a nightmare! We will never stay here agin. Booked three rooms for a work trip. Something went wrong with each reservation. Absolutely AWFUL customer service and HORRIBLE accommodations. Attempted to place one person in a makeshift room on property that they claimed they did not own. The dump was straight out of a 70s horror motel. The manager laughed and admitted that she would not stay in the room if it had been assigned to her as a guest. Then they ran some back-door deal and sent them to a hotel down the street for one night, before sending her back to the hotel for the second night's stay. The two other rooms had bathroom issues. The shower head completely fell out of the wall. It took them a few days to fix. They kept saying that they would transfer the guests room. The third room's shower handle fell off in the shower while using. Rooms were filthy, crumbs on/in furniture. The hotel messed-up payments on all three accounts. It took two weeks for anyone in their billing department to respond and fix the invoiced charges. This hotel should be fired from Tablet's list of booking options.
