Modern Design & Lively
Thanks to its location near Mount Ishizuchi, one of Japan’s highest mountain peaks, Saijo is known as the country’s spring-water capital. An eco-friendly initiative out of the University of Tokyo prompted the construction of a series of water-themed architectural projects, including the Itomachi Hotel. It’s Japan’s first zero-energy hotel, with two airy levels connected by open-air walkways and topped by a large, angular roof. Rooms are stark and minimalist, with blonde wood flooring, pale green tilework, simple writing desks, and luxurious beds on elevated platforms. Some have living areas with sleek modular furniture and private terraces; all have access to an ultra-modern coworking space and kitchen, a stylish café, and riverside gardens with futuristic water features.
