Modern Design & Lively
The original Hotel St. James sign still stands atop this 1912 Victorian-style hotel building in San Diego’s nightlife-focused Gaslamp Quarter. Today, though, the old St. James is now Palihotel San Diego, a 122-room boutique hotel by the Los Angeles–born Palisociety group. Like all of their hotels, Palihotel San Diego aims to preserve the character of its setting, from the marble staircase and the vintage elevators to the Victorian architectural details in the rooms. Equally, though, it’s distinctive for its signature Palihotels look — rich colors, eclectic, vintage-inspired décor, and a pronounced French accent.
In fact the rooms are uncharacteristically light and bright, making the most of the light from their Victorian-sized windows. Inside are substantial comforts, including plush queen or king beds alongside boutique-hotel favorites like Nespresso machines and SMEG mini-fridges. Saint James French Diner is the hotel’s versatile restaurant and bar, inspired in its aesthetics by the food halls of the south of France. Its menu, similarly, adds a French bistro influence to upscale American diner fare. And the roof deck, open Thursday through Sunday, is the perfect place for a late-afternoon drink before a night out in the always-lively Gaslamp Quarter.

Such a beautiful hotel and in a perfect location. The room was lovely, and the high-quality linens were an extra bonus. The cleanliness was excellent all around and the staff was lovely.

Hotel seemed nice, front desk service was good, bartender in attached bar was not all that friendly, but made good drinks. Rooms were tiny, thankfully got a nice Tablet upgrade to a less tiny room. Night time noise from the streets and bars around was really bad, one of the loudest places I have ever stayed. Also the parking / valet situation is terrible. they said it can take up to 30 minutes to get your car, but when I called in the am, the valet said it would be over an hour. He was super nice and apologetic, but he said he was the only one working and there were 6 cars in front of us. I told him we had a flight to catch and he very graciously accepted my offer to run the 3 blocks with him to where my car was parked and help me get it out of the lot. When we left there were 3 people in the lobby screaming at the poor front desk guy, 2 for the valet situation and 1 for a broken AC unit in their room. Needless to say not going to stay there again...
