Auberge Resorts chose a slightly out-of-the-way setting for its first hotel in Italy: instead of a location in the historic center of Florence, Collegio alla Querce, Auberge Resorts Collection is situated in a prestigious former college founded in 1868 by the Barnabite Fathers on a secluded hilltop overlooking the city. Extensive restorations preserved many of the property’s best features, including original frescoes and coffered wood ceilings, but the local design firm ArchFlorence turned the former classrooms into spacious suites with luxurious stone-lined bathrooms and private wine cellars. The onetime headmaster’s office now serves as a stylish cocktail and cigar lounge, and the olive- and oak-shaded gardens are home to an outdoor pool, the open-air Café Focolare, and the peaceful Aelia spa.
