There was a time not all that long ago when fans of contemporary hotels, if they were in the market for a ski holiday, had to set aside their preferences and make peace with the typical Alpine lodge. That’s hardly the case anymore — the Ormelune, in Val d’Isère, is as fine an example as you’ll find anywhere of the new-breed fun and funky boutique ski hotel.
The Ormelune should know. It was, until very recently, a member of the old guard. At some point, though, they caught the renovation bug, and the result is far indeed from Alpine kitsch. Rooms are simple, fun, with some slightly rustic touches and an eclectic, almost bohemian style that feels somehow more like the work of a collector or a curator than a traditional designer. Bathrooms, too often merely utilitarian, are stylish here, in rough-looking varnished concrete, with bathtubs in all but the smallest room category.
In the end it’s simply more fun than the Alpine norm. Why on earth skiing should be such a serious affair is a question that’s never been properly answered. The basics are all covered — on-site bar, restaurant and massage are necessities in a slopeside lodging — and you won’t miss the rest.
Please note: This hotel is seasonal, and is open from late November to early May. During select peak dates, arrivals are only accepted on Saturday or Sunday, and five- or seven-night minimums sometimes apply.
