Butterfly House Bahia
Ponta da Baleia, Cassange, Município de Maraú, Brazil
11 Rooms
Contemporary Classic & Secluded
Unless you have a private plane, the village of Barra Grande, located on Brazil’s Maraú Peninsula, isn’t exactly easy to get to. And Butterfly House Bahia is another ten miles outside that village. Luckily, there’s a handsome reward for the rather lengthy journey by some combination of Jeep, bus, speedboat and truck. It’s a jungle paradise: miles of white sandy beaches fringed with tall palm trees, clear blue water dotted with colorful coral reef, and a gorgeous (and environmentally conscious) hotel that’s designed to help you make the most of it.
Butterfly House calls itself a resort, but that name could give you the wrong idea. It’s more like an upscale version of the Brazilian pousada, or guesthouse, sustainably built with salvaged demolition wood and recycled materials. There are just eleven guest rooms. Three of those are suites, located within the main building — the Butterfly House — and simply outfitted with natural wood furnishings, crisp white fabrics, canopied beds, and private balconies overlooking gardens blooming with bright flowers. The other “rooms” are actually free-standing bungalows. Amenities vary: some have private outdoor showers, others have large front porches. All have charmingly tiled bathrooms and furniture imported from Morocco and France, no small feat if you remember the unpaved road you traveled down to arrive here.
Highlights at Butterfly House include a small swimming pool and the continental breakfast of your dreams: picture every tropical fruit you know, and several you don’t, lined up beside an array of freshly baked Brazilian pastries. Wander down to the beach bar (it’s five o’clock somewhere, right? Or at least noon somewhere?) and order a caipirinha, the citrusy national cocktail, to sip on the private beach. There’ll be no line to wait in, and on crowds to contend with: just calm water and pristine sand as far as you can see.
The peninsula is a natural playground for snorkelers, surfers, and hikers, all activities that the staff at Butterfly House can gladly arrange. They’ll also give you a lift to nearby Taipú de Fora, the beach that Brazilians voted one of the most beautiful in the country. Which is really saying something: as you’ll note by looking at a map, there’s a lot of coastline in this country, and fortunately, you’ve found yourself on one of the loveliest (and hardest-to-reach) sections of it.
