You don’t have to travel too far up Maine’s Atlantic coast to get some of that classic New England seaside atmosphere. Twenty minutes short of Portland, in the town of Scarborough’s charming little waterfront district, stands the Higgins Beach Inn, a Colonial Revival classic built in 1897 — set just a block from Higgins Beach itself, a splendid little sandy beach that’s one of Southern Maine’s best-loved vacation spots.
Some New England hotels could be accused of sticking a little too closely to tradition, but the Higgins Beach Inn takes some liberties — the seaside style in the guest rooms is turned up to 10, with vibrant colors, vintage postcard-inspired illustrations, and a bit of retro patina. The details, however, are modern boutique to a tee, from the bedside reading lamps to the Gilchrist & Soames bath products. The smallest rooms are cozy indeed, while the suites spread out with enclosed porches, sofa beds, and full-size bathtubs.
Meanwhile the inn’s restaurant, Shade, is no small part of the hotel’s appeal, serving oysters on the half-shell, a range of fresh seafood, and other classic New England beach fare on a covered porch, accompanied by cocktails, craft beer, and wine on draft.
