Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi
Via Bagni Nuovi 7, Valdidentro, Bormio, Italy
74 Rooms
Contemporary Classic & Lively
It’s been a while since these bagni were really nuovi — the thermal baths at Bormio, in the far Alpine north of Lombardy, have been an attraction since at least the Roman Empire, and the hotel dates back to 1836. As a destination for foreign visitors it may not be on the same level as your Tuscanys, your Amalfis, your Lake Comos. But if the Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi is any indication, Bormio is capable of playing in Italian hospitality’s highest league.
It starts with some subtle design, as throughout the seventy-four rooms and suites, restraint is the watchword. Historical elements meet contemporary design with that thoroughly Italian effortlessness. Space is plentiful, as it should be, and there’s more than a touch of luxury: many of the white marble-clad bathrooms feature whirlpool baths fed by thermal waters, and the Royal Suite, built for Vittorio Emanuele III, still holds his original pink Candoglia marble bathtub.
When it comes to facilities you’re spoilt for choice. In addition to the grand dining room and the café, Bagni Nuovi guests have access to the restaurant at the sister hotel, the Bagni Vecchi. Same goes for the spa — the Bagni Nuovi’s treatment rooms are more than extensive enough, but the Vecchi’s add a bit of variety. A shuttle connects the two, and also links you to the ski lift, giving both hotels’ guests the run of the town.
Please note: Minimum night restrictions may apply.
