One MICHELIN Key · A very special stay
Deep in the Burgundy countryside, not far from the village of Leugny, is what is either one of the smallest top-flight luxury hotels in existence, or one of the most extravagant bed and breakfasts to ever walk the land. La Borde began its life as a private residence well over five centuries ago, and while it’s necessarily been updated and expanded since then — the medievals couldn’t have anticipated the need for a helipad — it still traffics in the timeless, ageless pleasures of French country life.
The suites, for example, are given the French names for various flowers, from aubépine to tulipe, and sit regally beneath timbered ceilings. Some are equipped with fireplaces, while all come with Jacuzzi tubs. An elaborate locally sourced breakfast is offered daily, and while you’ll want to make time for the region’s excellent excellent restaurants, a very fine dinner can be arranged on site with a little advance notice.
Much of the menu is made from vegetables grown in the hotel’s vast garden — you could spend all day wandering La Borde’s grounds. There’s also a charming heated outdoor pool, as well as facilities for tennis, basketball, and pétanque, and a mini-spa offers a Turkish bath, a sauna, and massage.
