Washington’s coast is a little wilder and less developed than California’s, but it’s spectacular in its own right — and, perhaps surprisingly, it’s something of a surf destination as well. The city of Westport, on the south side of Grays Harbor, is two and a half hours from Seattle, but for surfers and other water-sports aficionados, it’s well worth the drive. What it lacked was a hotel with a bit of style, until founders Johannes Ariens and Cale Genenbacher raised some funds to turn a disused mid-century motel into LOGE Westport, a colorful and cleverly outfitted boutique-style adventure hotel.

As hip as it is, it’s far from frilly, with a touch of Seventies to the décor and bare-bones comforts for self-sufficient travelers. Instead of a restaurant there’s the Sands Cafe, serving third-wave coffee and expertly brewed espresso alongside a short but powerful selection of breakfasts and snacks. There’s plentiful outdoor space for socializing, as well as a covered outdoor kitchen with a community grill, and the gear shop (a partnership with the Seattle-based outdoor retailer Evo) offers everything you need for a surf outing at Westport State Beach.
