Sun Valley in Idaho is one of America’s great ski destinations, and while the postwar ski boom inspired some forgettably utilitarian architecture, there are some boutique hotels out there proving the point that contemporary design and ski-town coziness don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Hotel Ketchum, on Main Street in downtown Ketchum, is a prime example — a thorough renovation has left its interiors looking bright, sunny, and contemporary, combining modern furniture and a stylish graphic sensibility with classic rustic textures and materials of the traditional mountain lodge.
It’s clear that it’s meant to appeal to a younger audience than the average mountain lodge, and to that end it’s got a full complement of boutique-hotel services and amenities, from rooms wired with USB charging ports and 50-inch televisions to C.O. Bigelow bath products, high-end beds and linens, and a lobby lounge, re-styled as “the Hangout,” a combination breakfast room, lounge, game room, and café. There’s an outdoor pool and hot tub, as well as an on-site ski and bike shop, and a coin-op laundry for guests — an important consideration for mountain adventurers. A restaurant, a bar, and a café should be open by ski season; until then you’ll have to fuel your summer expeditions with the plentiful offerings of downtown Ketchum.
