Rather than reinvent the wheel, Domaine de la Charpinière practices the simple art of French country hospitality at a highly competent level. The grounds ramble over seven acres of Forez parkland, and the buildings are a mix of classic and contemporary elements, from century-old turrets covered in Virginia creeper to modern additions in glass or timber. There’s a very fine spa as well as a pool and a tennis court, and the restaurants include Le 1933, a stylish and semi-casual brasserie, and La Source, the hotel’s Michelin-starred gastronomic option, under the direction of chef Antoine Bergeron.
