Against the Haussmannian backdrop of the Rue de Milan, in Paris’s 9th Arrondissement, between the Gare St. Lazare and the hip neighborhood of South Pigalle, the contemporary façade of Laz’ Hôtel Spa Urbain gives a hint — but just the merest hint — of what’s inside. Once through its doors you’re treated to something that’s perhaps familiar enough in New York, but just about unheard-of in a Parisian boutique hotel: a loft-like post-industrial style, whitewashed brick, metal hardware, modernist furniture and all.
The rooms start out compact — “Cosy” is the designation — but not lacking in comfort, thanks to generous touches like Nespresso machines, Codage bath products, and up-to-date electronics. Move up the range and you’ll add balconies along with extra interior space, and the Lofts have private terraces with views over the city’s rooftops or Sacré-Cœur.
While most small Parisian hotels leave you to fend for yourself beyond breakfast, at Laz’ a stylish bar serves pastries, charcuterie, cheeses, and wine and cocktails in a richly textured and inviting space. What’s truly unusual, however, is the spa, with its swimming pool and its consciously bohemian, Balearic vibe — safe to say it’s an experience thats far above and beyond the local boutique-hotel norm.
