If you haven’t checked in on Georgia in a while, you might be surprised at what you find there. The former Soviet republic has opened itself to international travelers in a big way, and Tbilisi, the capital city, is apparently so beset with young, hip tourists that it needs a youth-oriented, communal-vibe boutique hotel along the lines of an Ace or a Freehand or a Mama Shelter. Fabrika follows a concept that’s familiar enough to anyone who’s seen these hotels — part boutique hotel, part hostel, part multi-purpose events space, a hotel where the social life takes precedence over traditional conceptions of luxury.

The building, a Soviet-era textile factory, is a utilitarian concrete structure, and the exterior has been left more or less alone, graffiti and all. It’s in the interior that the architects earned their pay, transforming a drab space into something vibrant and welcoming. Many of the rooms are hostel-style dorm rooms, while others are more typical private hotel rooms. Either way they’re stylish, sparse but well-composed, and while you won’t mistake them for seven-star hyper-luxury, they’re more than comfortable enough. Breakfast is a particular strength, as is the plentiful lounge space, from the lobby to the courtyard to the rooftop, ideal for mingling over coffee or drinks. And Fabrika’s location places you in the heart of Tbilisi, a city whose secrets your hosts are only too happy to share.
