Once one of the humbler beach towns in San Diego’s affluent North County, Oceanside is on the upswing, and a string of stylish new hotels have popped up in its lively downtown. Mission Pacific Beach Resort is one of them, occupying an enviable piece of waterfront real estate right in front of the town’s historic wooden pier. Many rooms and suites in the seven-story building face a quintessentially SoCal view — rolling waves, surfers, seagulls — and all guests have access to the resort’s crowning glory, a rooftop pool and bar with palm trees, retro-styled daybeds, and sunset panoramas over the Pacific.
The interiors are modern and down-to-earth, outfitted in natural materials and colors that mirror the surrounding landscape. Rooms have hardwood floors, linen-upholstered headboards, and built-in bespoke furnishings in pale wood, plus eclectic details like sculptural lamps and original artwork curated by the Oceanside Museum of Art. Bathrooms are spacious with sophisticated lighting systems and oversized walk-in showers. Many rooms have private balconies, and apartment-like suites have a boho-chic air, with cozy sectional sofas facing views of the sea. While it’s hard to top drinks at the rooftop bar, the hotel’s other venues take their shot: coffee and breakfast burritos are served on a sunny ground-level terrace at High/Low, Valle is notably the only MICHELIN-Starred Mexican restaurant in Southern California, and sweet treats are on offer at the Top Gun House, the adorable historic cottage — now part of the hotel’s property — famously featured in the 1986 film.
