The stately corner building at Vesterbrogade 9A in Vesterbro, one of Copenhagen’s hippest neighborhoods, has been operating as a hotel for nearly a century. But in its current incarnation as the Grand Joanne, the accommodations are almost secondary. After years of renovations, the hotel reopened with a new name and a fresh look in 2023. The owners conceived it as a hub for cultural experiences, but “with a hotel on top” — think pop-up art installations in the lobby, DJs spinning on the rooftop terrace, and a lively local scene in the ground-level restaurant and bar.

The rooms are nice, too, high-ceilinged, filled with sunshine, and outfitted with modern, down-to-earth decor. Natural materials abound, from wicker lamps and raffia headboards to linen drapery and blonde wood furniture. There’s a distinctly cozy vibe that suits the climate — patterned plush carpets, fluffy down comforters, heated floors — as well as playful details like custom stationary sets, bathrooms lined in retro-looking bronze tiles, and vintage vanity mirrors.
