Der Teufelhof insists it's not exactly a hotel, but rather a guesthouse and cultural center. Combining two historic homes just a stone’s throw from the Rhine, in Old Town, Basel, Teufelhof was founded not by hoteliers but artists seeking to subsidize their creative pursuits. While ownership has since changed, the philosophy is the same; Teufelhof sees itself as in the business of “brokering” interactions between guests and the humanities. To that end, a gallery showcases local photography and contemporary painting, an archaeological cellar offers a walk around ancient Basel walls and Teufelhof’s own theater fills seats for cabaret, comedy and more. A raft of dining options includes the casual Atelier, fine dining at Bel Etage, and a bar teeming with activity.
