The town of Hakone, in Japan’s Kanagawa Prefecture, is famous for its hot springs; travelers are presented with a wide range of accommodations, but perhaps nothing as tranquil as Gora Karaku. Here the fundamental pieces of Japanese rural hospitality are all present and accounted for: hot-spring onsen baths, meditative views, and impeccably sourced local and seasonal cuisine. The rooms pursue comfort perhaps more avidly than most, and both the tatami-style and Western-style rooms are unusually plush — though, in their muted colors and focused design, they’re also unusually stylish. Every unit comes with its own onsen bath in addition to the public bath complex.
