There are nine car-free villages in Switzerland, including Wengen, a picturesque hamlet on a sunny mountain terrace in the Bernese Oberland. A few minutes’ stroll from the train station and the ski lift is Braunbär Hotel & Spa. This stately wooden chalet dates back to the late 19th century, though it was thoroughly updated inside for its reopening in 2025.

Rooms have a retro Scandinavian look with framed vintage travel posters, globe-shaped wall sconces, and built-in benches and bookshelves made of pale wood. Many open onto private balconies with scenic views, and family rooms feature stylish bunk beds tucked away behind crimson drapery. Of the hotel’s dining venues, a restored cable car has been turned into a cozy fondue cabin for two, while the terrace with an open-air fireplace is great for après-ski. The spa’s gorgeous glass-encased pool features panoramic views of the snow-covered Alps.
