The ultra-luxe Patina hotel group chose, for its first foray into Japan, not Tokyo or Kyoto but Osaka: specifically, a parcel of land that looks directly out over Osaka Castle and the surrounding park. This glass-fronted structure is draped in greenery, and what’s inside is a hotel that’s state-of-the-art both in its comforts and in its warm-toned quiet-luxury aesthetic.

It’s also identifiably Japanese, thanks to the subtle and sensitive work of its architects, who took their inspiration from centuries of local craft. Beneath this sober surface the rooms and suites are nothing short of lavish; the spaces are generous, the comforts are first-class, and the views are like nothing else in town. A high-tech spa and wellness center adds to the appeal; multiple Japanese restaurants are joined by Iñaki, a Basque restaurant with a 19th-floor view of the castle.
