A wave of stylish new hotels have popped up in Oaxaca to accommodate the influx of travelers to one of Mexico’s most photogenic destinations. Even in a crowded cohort, Majagua Boutique Hotel stands out, in part for doing things a little differently.
It’s housed in a restored 1950s Art Deco mansion, a rarity in the region, and is strictly adults-only, with complimentary craft cocktails served at check-in. It doesn’t hurt that the rooms are light-filled and design-forward, with modern bespoke furnishings, artisan-made textiles, and eclectic art objects from Asia and Africa.
Elevated Oaxacan dishes are served on a treetop-framed terrace, and locally produced mezcal flows freely in the speakeasy-style bar. And, perhaps best of all, the hotel is right in the center of town, making it easy to come and go throughout the day and night.
