Boutique hoteliers have rediscovered the Hudson Valley in a big way, but few of them have shown as much ambition as the proprietors of Pocketbook Hudson. First a textile mill, later a pocketbook factory, this red brick industrial structure has stood since the 1890s on a generous parcel of land just off Hudson, New York’s main drag. But it’s only after a 2025 re-imagining at the hands of Charlap Hyman & Herrero that it became what it is today: a proper luxury boutique hotel on a scale that sets it apart from the region’s farmhouse inns and modernized motor lodges.

Its rooms and suites benefit from the contrasts between the brick-and-timber construction, the modern minimalist décor, and the pastoral small-town setting. And with capacity for close to 100 guests, Pocketbook draws enough of a crowd to justify some impressive services, including a café and bar, an art exhibition space, a grab-and-go market, and even a subterranean nightclub. The Baths, set in an adjacent building, open in late 2025, while Ambos Restaurant is already serving New Argentine fare cooked on an open fire from local and seasonal ingredients.
