Only a handful of historic buildings survived the fire that swept through the Greek castle town of Ioannina in 1820. One of these, a handsome stone mansion near the castle walls, is now home to Kamares Boutique Hotel & Spa. Much of its old-world grandeur remains — heavy wooden doors, brick archways, ornate fireplaces, sumptuous antiques, and original tile flooring. Rooms exude period charm, too, with exposed stone or brick walls, decorative bedframes, and vaulting wood-beamed ceilings.

Despite its retro atmosphere, though, Kamares is up to date where it counts. Alongside the rooms’ antique velvet loveseats and hand-painted wall panels you’ll find Nespresso machines and modern bathrooms with Jacuzzis. The hotel’s Bodrum Spa, meanwhile, offers some intensive relaxation; the historic town center’s restaurants, shops, and museums are all a short stroll away.
