Though it is in fact a house in the country, Brimstone is not at all a typical country-house hotel. Here the style of hospitality owes more to luxury boutique hotels and to owner-operated guest houses than it does to the classic country mansions of aristocratic origin. It’s set in the Lake District, among some of England’s wildest landscapes, on the 35-acre Langdale Estate.

Here, rather than butlers or footmen, you’re attended by “hosts,” who can facilitate anything from a fresh towel to a climbing expedition — outdoor wear is provided via the Epicentre Bootroom. Guests also enjoy complimentary access to the Brimstone Spa’s elaborate Thermal Experience, as well as drinks and snacks in the Reading Room.

The rooms and suites are spacious, and are as plush as the surrounding peaks are rugged; all come with balconies and at least one proper bathtub (the Duet Suite comes with a pair). Meanwhile Stove, the proprietors’ restaurant, is a short walk from the hotel, and just beyond that is Wainwrights’ Inn, the even less formal pub option.
